I like to get as “hands-on” as possible when writing in parts for my tracks. Clicking in notes with the pencil tool works well enough, but I always think it can be more fun and expressive to actually play some keys on my MIDI controllers!

MIDI overdub recording in Session View is my favorite way to add new notes to existing MIDI clip ideas, while still keeping a “hands-on” approach to writing parts. Step Recording is another technique we can use to seamlessly add new notes to MIDI clips. This one is especially helpful if you’re not a very proficient keyboard player.
